Some people opt to replace the engines in their automobiles because they plan to keep the automobiles for the rest of their lives. There is not a specific mileage milestone when you should replace the engine. Automobile engines vary in their longevity. Some only last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles, and others can last over 300,000 miles. Rather than keeping an eye on the odometer, keep an eye on the problems we are going to list below. These are signs that your car needs a new engine.
Constant Knocking Noises
If you hear knocking noises coming from the engine constantly, this can be an indication that the pistons are damaging the cylinder walls. Eventually, the rod bearings are going to wear out, and they will cause the rods to which the pistons are attached to move up and down inside the cylinder walls crookedly. Consequently, the pistons will make contact with the cylinder walls when they should not.
Constant Overheating
Another sign that your automobile may need a new engine or a partial engine rebuild is constant overheating. It could be that the cooling system needs to be rebuilt or the head gasket has cracked. Unfortunately, a cracked head gasket can only be repaired by partially rebuilding the engine. We can get to the bottom of the reason why your engine overheats constantly and recommend the proper repairs.
Excessive Engine Exhaust
If you happen to notice a ton of smoke in your rearview mirror, your engine is releasing too much exhaust. This can happen when a system is compromised and hemorrhaging fluid. For example, if your cooling system is compromised and hemorrhaging coolant, you will see white exhaust smoke. A fuel hemorrhage causes black smoke, and an oil hemorrhage causes blue smoke.
Metal in the Motor Oil
Your engine definitely needs to be replaced if, when you check the motor oil, you see metal in it. We would love to say that this can be repaired, but it can’t. When you see metal in the motor oil, this means that the engine parts are disintegrating into the oil as it circulates through the engine.
Significant Power Loss
Finally, you also need a new engine if your existing engine can no longer produce power. Unfortunately, there will come a point when the engine simply cannot run anymore. This means that the engine has reached the end of its lifespan and you need to replace it as soon as possible.
