Signs My Muffler Is Bad

Signs My Muffler Is Bad

Your muffler can go bad after 80,000 miles of service. In fact, it can go bad as soon as 40,000 miles. This prevents the muffler from muffling the exhaust system noise and routing the exhaust out of the tailpipe. You will start to notice the problems listed below if your muffler needs to be replaced. Do not worry. We can remove the old muffler and replace it with a new one at our auto repair shop.

Excess Noise

You may end up with excess exhaust system noise if the muffler has a hole in it or is damaged. Your vehicle will be extremely loud, especially when you accelerate. In fact, the automobile may be so loud that you will get pulled over by the local authorities and issued a moving violation or fix-it ticket. If your car, truck, or utility vehicle is suddenly extremely loud, come straight to our shop.

Damage

The muffler can also show physical signs of damage. It can be damaged by road debris, speed bumps, and other road hazards. The muffler can get dented, get holes in it, and corrode. A damaged muffler is an ineffective muffler, even if your vehicle isn’t louder than normal. If you notice damage on the muffler, again, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can fix the problem.

Water

Another physical sign of muffler damage is dripping water. The muffler will deal with condensation; this is normal. What you should never see is water dripping from the muffler. This is an indication that the muffler has been damaged externally and is leaking water. If you see water puddles on the garage floor and look underneath your vehicle to see the muffler leaking, call us right away.

Overheating

Finally, the muffler can release scorching exhaust into the engine if it is leaking. Naturally, this will cause your engine to overheat. The engine’s temperature should always remain below 220 degrees Fahrenheit. If the exhaust is floating into the engine from the muffler, your engine’s temperature will rise above this maximum threshold. You will see the temperature gauge needle rise into the red zone.
