One of the first signs that your truck’s alternator is going bad is a battery light on the dashboard. This dashboard warning light covers the alternator, the battery, and any other electrical system problem. If you believe that your truck needs a new alternator, which is normal after 10 years, give us a call to schedule a service appointment that is convenient with your schedule.
Accessory Problems
Aside from the dashboard warning, you may also start to have problems with your truck’s accessories. We mean the power accessories when we say accessories. Anything that has power, such as the windows and seats, the navigation system, or the USB ports can malfunction if the alternator is dying.
Battery Problems
In addition to the accessory problems, you will start to have battery problems, as well. You will have to jump-start the battery frequently to get your truck started. This is a sign that the alternator is not producing enough power to keep the battery charged, which is one of its responsibilities.
Engine Noises
If you are driving along in you hear strange noises coming from the engine of your truck, it could be that the alternator is making these noises. Specifically, the alternator may squeal, growl, grind, or whine if it is wearing down or the belt is wearing down. These noises will come from the engine.
Headlight Problems
Another thing that receives power from the alternator is the headlights. In addition to the headlights, the taillights and interior lights receive power from the alternator. If the alternator is going bad, you may start to have problems with all of your truck’s lights.
Stalling Problems
Added to the alternator’s task list is providing power to the spark plugs. The spark plugs need power in order to fire sparks. Without sparks, you will not be able to get your truck started. Consequently, if the alternator cannot send enough power to the spark plugs, your truck may stall.
Surging Electricity
Finally, the alternator has a maximum voltage that it should produce and that voltage is 14.5 volts. Anything above 14.5 volts can overload the electrical system and cause electrical surges. This will cause your electrical system to overheat and you may even end up with some blown fuses in the truck.
Do not worry. We are here to help, so call us today to schedule a service visit for your truck. We would be happy to test the alternator and replace it if it has gone bad.
